Global Citizen Festival 2018

 

All roads led to FNB Stadium  this past Sunday as global citizens gathered to celebrate Mandela’s 100th year festival, organized and hosted by Global Citizen in partnership with the Motsepe foundation. Attendees blew up twitter as they expressed their excitement to see ‘King B’ and her Husband, Jay Z perform at the event. A lot of people expressed how patriotic they felt having such an incredible and significant moment in history take place on their home soil, South Africa.

 

South Africa’s favourite export , Trevor Noah, came back home and graced the stage as the key host for the festival, accompanied by South Africa’s finest selection of talented hosts such as Nomzamo Mbatha, Bonang Matheba and Anele Mdoda to name a few. The audience were extremely excited to see their very own holding the fort.

 

 

The keywords pulled a volume of 357 775 posts over the past week. Seeing a peak in conversation on Saturday, during the concert. Concert attendees were excited to see Beyonce come to South Africa after her last visit being in 2013.

Beyonce and Jay Z later closed off the star-studded event with performances from their OTR II tour, which sent twitter into a frenzy as they put on an electrifying performance. The audience was quite emotional as they got to be a part of this significant moment in South African history. 

 

 

The only emotion in this conversation is Joy.

 

 

On a darker note… A beautiful night of celebrations ended in terror for hundreds of attendees. Dozens of people have come forward to detail their experiences after the festival, explaining how they were mugged at gunpoint, heard shots being fired and were attacked at the Sasol garage just across from the stadium. The keywords ‘Sasol’ and  #GlobalCitizen shot straight to number 1 and 2 on the trends list after people took to Twitter to to share their horror experience, holding the organisers, as well as the SAPS, liable for the tragic events that followed because security was not provided after the show.
